Plot Overview
The victim is someone well-known to the detectives...Lead Coroner Dr. Stan Matthews. The killer is a woman who works as a flagger at a construction site. Dr. Matthews was found stabbed several times in a parking garage, the wounds all at close range. Betty is very shaken, as Matthews was not only her boss, but a mentor and close friend. She has to take over his position as expert witness for the prosecution in a case where a man is on trial for the shooting death of a four-year-old boy during a raid on a meth house and discovers that Stan's testimony doesn't match up with the evidence. Subsequent investigation by the detectives turns up a batch of similar cases, all of them where the victim was a child, where evidence and testimony are not in sync, and they discover a tragic secret in Stan's past--his grandson drowned in a pool due to the negligence of the supervising adults, and he was unable to secure a conviction for them. Could he have possibly been fabricating evidence in similar cases in an odd bid for justice?
