Plot Overview

The victim is a young patrolman, with whom Angie and Brian are familiar with, as they aided him in subduing a suspect a couple of days prior to his death. The killer is his older brother, a stand-up comedian and magician. The detectives are called to a pier where it appears that a police officer has committed suicide. He apparently shot himself in the head as he stepped off the pier and fell into the ocean, but no body is found there. It's now six months since the Neville Montgomery case was solved, and Staff Sergeant Cross has been reassigned, so Oscar has now been promoted to Staff Sergeant. Since the victim was a cop, he's being pressured by Chief Wells to close the case fast. His promotion means that there is an opening to be filled on the staff, so a 'legacy' named Mitch Kennecki has been reassigned to their homicide squad. The body is eventually found, but Betty's examination reveals that he was killed earlier and elsewhere...so just what did the witnesses see happen on that pier? The investigation reveals that , even though the two men were brothers, there was a great deal of animosity between them, mostly centering on the fact that the younger brother hated that his wife and son had bonded with him. An even deeper look into their family background, especially into the relationship of their parents and the death of their mother, provides a much more viable motive for the murder. All through the case, Angie and Lucas have their concerns about their new team member Kennecki...he has promise as a detective but seems to lack tact and maturity.
