Plot Overview

Saul Panzer is arrested and charged with murder after the body of a girl he knew was fished out of the river and he was found in her room, going through her things. Wolfe naturally refuses to believe that one of his trusted legmen is a killer, so Archie pays a visit to the morgue, where the pathologist in charge tells him that he can't give an accurate cause of death, but he suspects that it wasn't drowning. Further investigation uncovers the fact that the girl was involved in blackmail, and when the pathologist discovers the cause of her death and winds up dead himself, Wolfe becomes clearly convinced that Saul is not the killer.
