Plot Overview

Wolfe is awakened from a deep sleep by a police Lieutenant who wants him to identify the body of Archie Goodwin. The irate detective arrives at the morgue, only to find that the body isn't that of his assistant, and that the real Archie is resting in a cell upstairs. Archie reveals that the dead man was a fellow private eye who was posing as him for some reason or another, and soon they are confronted by 'clients' of the deceased man, who claim that the real Archie was not the man they met with and that they spoke with Wolfe on the phone. Now Wolfe is certain that someone is posing as him as well, and he and Archie wind up searching for a green lacquered box that holds the key to the bizarre mystery.
