Plot Overview
Punky recounts in her diary the tragic events of January 28, 1986. The day before at Abraham Lincoln Elementary was Career Day, and each child told what they wanted to be when they grew up. Punky's aspiration was to be an astronaut. The teacher, Mike, says that the Space Shuttle is launching the next day and a teacher (Christa McAulliffe) was on it. He offers to bring his TV so they can all watch the launch.
After that, the scene transitions to the next day at home. Punky walks in, her face stained with tears. When Henry asks why she was home early, Punky buries her face crying in Henry's arms and tells him the Space Shuttle "blew up." Henry lets Punky cry it out as she tells what she and the class saw. The next day, the class comes to terms with the disaster and they look to Punky with some disdain as she insists that the tragedy does not dissuade her from wanting to be an astronaut. Punky gets a special visit from Buzz Aldrin, one of the Apollo astronauts that landed on the moon, and he instills some hope in Punky, assuring her that "accidents happen" such as the Space Shuttle explosion.
