Behind the Scenes

• Casting: When the pilot was still in the process of casting, Kyle Gass from Tenacious D expressed his interest in playing a demon on the show—a comic relief demon named Bud. His audition was well received by the production company and by director Kevin Smith, who talked about the experience of directing the Reaper pilot in episode 8 of SModcast. Smith commented that it was a no-brainer to cast a name like Gass because he would draw a built-in fan base and because if the series took off then there was a good chance that Jack Black would get involved in an episode. However, when Gass auditioned for the network, the executives decided not to cast him for the role. Smith claims in the podcast that he very nearly walked out on the show because of their "retarded" decision. Eventually, the character was entirely dropped and Bud's scenes were given to Ray Wise instead because they couldn't find someone to shine in their audition like Gass did.

Allusions and References

• The Divine Comedy: The wooden box that contains the vessel bears the engraving "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate". (Actually, it is misspelled as "Lasicate".) This is a famous line from Dante Alighieri's epic poem Divina Commedia, where it is inscribed on the gate to hell, and translates as "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here".
