Reign: The Conqueror is an anime drama series which reimagines the life of Alexander the Great in a science fiction setting. The series was based on Hiroshi Aramata's novel Alexander Senki (which is also the Japanese title of the series). The series was intended to be an international production which would traverse the boundaries of the animation industry.
Despite the intention to break into the American market by character designer Peter Chung, the series was hampered by financial difficulties since production began in 1997. The series originally featured much of the voice cast from Chung's most well known series, Æon Flux. Eventually the series was made and broadcast on WOWOW in Japan, but the American release would not be seen until 2003.
The American dubbing process for the series fell into another series of troubles stemming from the breakdown of an independent dub. Initially, veteran voice director Jack Fletcher was to organize the English dub, but Tokyopop stepped in after the fourth episode and recast many of the voices. However, they kept the dubbing from the first four episodes as it was in the Fletcher dub. After two years of producing the English dub, the series was picked up by Adult Swim but quickly sank into obscurity after fan reaction was negative.
