Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon" is an adult-oriented comedy revival of the Nickelodeon series The Ren & Stimpy Show that aired on Spike TV. Original creator John Kricfalusi spearheaded the new episodes with the original production company behind the first series. Kricfalusi and Spümcø were dismissed by the network after tensions based on speed and content became irreconcilable. The new series premiered with an episode from The Ren & Stimpy Show, "Man's Best Friend", which was banned from air by the network and often considered as the final straw for Kricfalusi's relationship with Nickelodeon.
The series was one of the first original programs created for Spike TV, a rebranded and revamped TNN aimed at young men. Viacom hired Kricfalusi to make an "extreme" version of The Ren & Stimpy Show and gave him greater control over the writing and episode content than what he was given by Nickelodeon. In addition to Kricfalusi, several original members of the crew worked on the series, although much of Spümcø was made up of new artists and writers who hadn't worked on the old series. Kricfalusi also made use of the studio which animated his best episodes during the Nickelodeon years (specifically "Space Madness", "Black Hole" and "The Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen") Though most of the original cast signed on to do voices for the series, Billy West, the original voice of Stimpy and other characters, chose not to return to the series and was replaced with Eric Bauza. West would go on to say in an interview with UGO.com that the show "wasn't funny" and "it would have damaged my career."
The series premiered in June 2003 in an animation block also featuring Gary the Rat, Stripperella and digitally remastered episodes of the original series. After a month, it was canceled for some of the same reasons that caused Kricfalusi to be removed from the series in the first place—namely content. Many people objected to the unrestrained crudeness of the comedy, particularly the portrayal of the titular characters as homosexuals in the first original episode, "Onward and Upward". Advertisers were, according to Kricfalusi, "freaked out" by some of the content of the new series, particularly the finished but unaired episode "Naked Beach Frenzy." Four episodes have never been aired in the United States, but were later released on DVD in 2006. After Ren & Stimpy was pulled from air, the other components of the animation block were cancelled or ended within a year and the block was discontinued.
