Comedy is a genre of television programs which are intended to be funny. The term is derived from Greek theatre, where it was distinguished from tragedy by the fact that the heroes of comedies typically triumphed over obstacles. In the Middle Ages, the term was extended to refer to any story with a happy ending for the hero or heroes. Today the term is used for any story, film, play, TV show or performance which is intended to evoke laughter from the audience. In TV, the term is applied to everything from sitcoms to sketch comedies or variety shows, and even some dramedies.
