Basic Information
Like most of the filmed bits of this era of Saturday Night Live, MacGruber was created by a member of The Lonely Island--in this case, Jorma Taccone. Taccone pitched the idea to Forte several times, who only decided to write the sketch "to get him to shut up."
Each installment of MacGruber retains the same general format. The theme song plays and cuts to stock footage of a building from a distance. It then cuts to inside, where alarms are blaring above some variation of "building control room." MacGruber has only a few seconds to disarm the bomb using a handful of household items lying around. Inevitably, he gets distracted and the bomb explodes, destroying the building. The following iterations typically build on the joke from the first segment. For instance, in the episode hosted by Betty White, who played MacGruber's grandmother, MacGruber gets into a fight with his grandmother, which escalates in the second segment, and is rectified in the third segment.
