Basic Information

English disco musician Barry Gibb hosts a political talk show, co-hosted by his brother Barry. The sketch makes light of the Bee Gees' 1970s era of popularity. Although the guests are current, the set is decorated in a decidedly disco-era pattern, and the Gibbs wear white leisure suits with large bell bottoms. Both also sport long, feathered hair, and Barry has 70s-style facial hair.

Fallon's portrayal of Barry also pokes fun at the falsetto voice which characterized such Bee Gees hits as "Stayin' Alive" and "Nights on Broadway." Fallon's Gibb uses the falsetto even for his speaking voice, and some of his dialogue is unintelligible as a result.

Compounding the comedy of Fallon's voice is the character's volatility. Without changing his voice, Barry is often threatening, even violent towards his guests, no matter how venerable they may be. He takes offense at the slightest misunderstanding, and as a result, very little discussion takes place of the actual issues. Robin is portrayed as the target of the lion's share of Barry's abuse and rarely gets a word in edgewise. As a result, "The Barry Gibb Talk Show" is as much a parody of such political debate shows as Hannity & Colmes as it is of the Gibb brothers and their 1970s kitschiness.

Appearances

  1. 29x02 - Justin Timberlake.
  2. 30x16 - Cameron Diaz/Green Day.
  3. 32x08 - Justin Timberlake (2). "Iraq Study Group." Guests Jimmy Carter, Thomas Friedman and Sandra Day O'Connor try to discuss the Iraq War, but they don't get the chance.

Trivia

  • This is one of the few recurring sketches in SNL history to recur only after the cast member star had left. Fallon was a cast member for the sketch's first appearance in the twenty-eighth season, but he left at the end of the following season to pursue a film career. However, when Timberlake's then-girlfriend Cameron Diaz hosted the show in Season Thirty, Fallon (who was then promoting his film Fever Pitch) returned to make a cameo and repeat one of his most popular one-time sketches. He returned again when Timberlake himself hosted in Season Thirty-Two.
