Basic Information
Fred Herman Jones started out as the team captain of Mystery Inc. 17 years old and noted for blond hair and an ascot, Fred was quite the pragmatist, devising the Goldberg-esque contraptions to capture the episode's faux spook. He is the principal driver of the team van, the Mystery Machine. Fred is based on Dobie Gillis, who was created in a series of short stories by Max Shulman.
Character History
Over the past 25 years, Fred's character has tweaked: in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, he was a tabloid-obsessed pinhead who always accused bully Red Herring of the crime when Red really wasn't. Since the start of the made-for-TV films in 1998 and subsequent shows, Fred is shown to be a little addled in the head, his attempt at hipness failing miserably. But he will still deliver when the chips are down. In the two live-action movies, Fred is played by Freddie Prinze, Jr.
