Hammer is about to participate in an Elvis impersonator contest and is told that the finalist from Dallas will perform before him and that the Miami contestant will follow. Sledge remarks, "Between Dallas and Miami? That's a tough place!". This is a reference to the show being on against ratings powerhouses Dallas (on CBS) and Miami Vice (on NBC).
After Hammer questions the janitor, he angrily excuses himself and says, "I have to go watch Mr. Belvedere!", to which Hammer replies, "Well, SOMEONE has to!". This is a reference to Mr. Belvedere, the sitcom that was the lead-in to Sledge Hammer! in the Friday night ABC lineup. This was the first shot taken at Mr. Belvedere, which in turn led to that series making a derogatory reference to Sledge Hammer, and the Hammer writers zinging their lame lead-in once again!
