Plot Overview
Lord Balthazar has learned about Clockwork Smurf and his abilities, and visits Gargamel to hatch a plan to seize the miniature robot owned by King Gerard, and then force it to help them find the Smurf Village, where they will turn the Smurfs into gold.
Meanwhile, Bigmouth is lonely because he has no friends and goes to visit Gargamel, but he cruelly mocks him and tells him to go away, causing Bigmouth to cry. Later, Bigmouth comes upon a family picnicking in the forest and asks if he can join them and play, but they panic and flee. Bigmouth begins to cry and says he has no friends.
But then he meets Clockwork, and it is Clockwork who immediately accepts him as a friend, which King Gerard accepts.
At the Smurf Village, Handy has created a voice synthesizer to take to King Gerard and have installed in Clockwork. The Smurflings are allowed to travel with Handy to meet King Gerard and Clockwork, all this while scenes of Bigmouth and Clockwork playing together are shown and Lord Balthazar shows Gargamel a giant robot named Goliath, which he plans to use to invade King Gerard's castle and capture Clockwork. (Balthazar had earlier visited King Gerard to demand to have Clockwork but was thrown out of the castle, making Balthazar very angry.)
The subplots come together when Lord Balthazar and Gargamel arrive at the castle in Goliath during an overnight coup attempt, making their demands: Give us Clockwork or we destroy the castle. The soldiers and guards attempt to fight off Goliath but all powerful ammunition proves ineffective.
Eventually, Papa Smurf and Hefty, along with Clockwork – who in the meantime was a the Smurf Village for installation of his new voice synthesizer – are summoned to the castle, which by now is heavily damaged. Bigmouth sees Feathers flying with the two Smurfs and Clockwork as his passengers and asks what's going on, to which Papa Smurf calls for Bigmouth to follow them.
Just as Goliath is about to have broken in the walls of the castle, Clockwork arrives, seemingly to save the day.
However, Goliath's fist easily destroys Clockwork, crushing him to bits, and then returns attention to breaking into the castle.
But Lord Balthazar didn't count on Bigmouth.
After Bigmouth cries over Clockwork being destroyed, he realizes what he must do to save his real friends: the Smurfs and King Gerard.
Despite being much smaller than Goliath, they soon realize that Bigmouth is also incredibly strong. With ease, he picks up Goliath, swings him around and throws him into the side wall of the castle, destroying the robot and forcing Balthazar and Gargamel to flee. In Balthazar's overzealousness of being challenged as a fearsome force, he forgot that his initial goal was to use Clockwork to lead them to the Smurf Village ... but instead, he destroyed Clockwork and eventually lost his battle with Bigmouth.
In the end, Handy is able to repair Clockwork and install the voice synthesizer, allowing it to talk. Bigmouth is impressed and asks Clockwork if he likes him, to. All Clockwork can say is "Hi," which draws laughs from the others and impresses Bigmouth. Handy points out, "One step at a time. Rome wasn't built in a day."
