So It Goes (1976–1977) was a British music series hosted by Tony Wilson, a journalist who would eventually go on to found Factory Records and support bands like Joy Division and The Buzzcocks. The series was notable for being one of the few outlets on television, particularly British television, to spotlight the burgeoning punk scene. Although the series was influential in retrospect, it was only seen in three ITV regions for the duration of its run.
The series, despite its short length, managed to feature a great number of bands that would become icons in the scene. It gave The Sex Pistols their first television appearance and saw exclusive performances by the likes of The Clash, Patti Smith and Siouxsie and the Banshees, among others. A typical episode of the program would include several performances, interviews with bands often on location, music commentary by people like Clive James and the occasional sketch.
Though Wilson had planned to continue the series into its third season, the bosses at Granada Television cancelled So It Goes after its second season. The network came to this decision as a direct result of a profanity laden interview with Iggy Pop broadcast in episode 13.
