Sony Corporation (ソニー株式会社) is a Japan-based multinational conglomerate, focusing on electronics and entertainment.
With the acquiring of Columbia Pictures Entertainment in 1989, it became a major actor in the US entertainment industry. Renaming it Sony Pictures Entertainment in 1991, it remains influential in the film and television industries.
Among the company's most recognizable products are the Xperia smartphones and tablets, and thePlayStation video game consoles. Earlier products include the U-matic and Betamax recording video cassettes and the Walkman audio players.
