Season Five of Spin City premiered on October 18, 2000. The first season without Michael J. Fox, the fifth season introduces Charlie Sheen as the new deputy mayor and excises most of the supporting cast. Nikki, James and Janelle all mysteriously disappear without a word, making them all victims of Chuck Cunningham Syndrome.

This season also saw the addition of Angie Ordonez as an assistant to the Mayor. However, she left the series at the end of the season, claiming that she felt that the character wasn't being used enough.

To further signify the change between the Fox era and the new dawn of the Sheen era for the show, the opening credits sequence was also redone with a new theme song. The season ended with a two part episode broadcast as one hour long special on May 23, 2001.
