Basic Information

Lo is the only daughter, as well as the middle child, of Mr. Ridgemount, the founder and owner of the Ridgemount Resorts hotel chain (of which the Surfer's Paradise resort is the flagship hotel), and his wife Mrs. Ridgemount. Initially seen in the pilot episode as a spoiled "Daddy's girl" type who has lived the easy life all her life, she runs into trouble when she throws a huge end-of-school party at Surfer's Paradise, which draws the attention of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and a television news crew after the party gets out of control. As a result, Lo is punished by her father by being made to get a job at the hotel, as well as having to move out of the Ridgemount family's penthouse at the top of the hotel and into staff housing nearby until she can learn to be more responsible.

Lo, who is 15 years old, is the youngest of the six main characters on the show. She is very pretty, with long brown hair in which she wears a lavender-colored tropical flower decoration, and her signature outfit is a pale yellow summer dress. Personality-wise, she is very friendly, as she quickly makes friends with Reef, Fin, Broseph, Emma and Johnny after an initial rough spot with the rest of the gang (particularly Fin, who was angry about Lo being the reason the gang had to miss out on surfing on their first day at the hotel because they had to clean up the resort instead, in the aftermath of Lo's party) and often helps the gang out with their problems when needed. She is also the girliest of the three main female characters, contrasting to the more athletic and tomboyish Fin and Emma. Although she has not been seen surfing much early on, Lo is shown to be a very good surfer herself.

Over the course of the first season, Lo has also proven herself to be a "Jill of all trades" of sorts while working at Surfer's Paradise. Through most of the season, she primarily works as a waitress at the Pirate Ship, the hotel's themed restaurant, where she has to wear a "serving wench" uniform as part of her job while working under the supervision of restaurant manager and head waitress Kelly. She also works periodically as a babysitter (where she often has her hands full dealing with bratty and unruly kids) and, since the events of "Endless Bummer", has worked as a maid, alongside Fin, as part of head housekeeper Rosie's housekeeping team. Lo does not initially display much of a work ethic early on due to her not having much of a concept of how the real world works, particularly when she slacks on the job or sometimes takes unauthorized breaks to go shopping, although that ethic has begun to slowly develop.

Lo has also run into problems with her original boss Kelly, who has displayed some enmity toward her due to Lo being the hotel owner's daughter. Since Lo began working at the Pirate Ship (and even after she was transferred to Housekeeping), Kelly has relished every opportunity to cause trouble for Lo while on duty (such as when Kelly, who overhears that Lo is not really good with younger kids, deliberately nominates her to be the new hotel babysitter), and has kept Lo in line by using threats of calling the rich girl's father to get her in trouble if she does not do what Kelly tells her to do, regardless of how purposely embarrassing or humiliating those assignments are. Later on, Kelly draws Lo's ire when she begins dating Lo's older brother Ty (whom both she and Kelly know Emma has a crush on) and she tells Lo that she intends to use Ty to get in good with the rest of the Ridgemount family, even hinting that she has her eye on the Ridgemount family fortune. Despite Kelly's bad behavior toward her, Lo is able to count on the support of Emma and the rest of her friends as she continues working at Surfer's Paradise.

Quotes

  • Ty (calling to Lo): Lo? Lo? LO! (Lo moans)
Ty: It's amazing, I leave for one day, and you manage to trash the place. (Ty opens the blinds)
Lo (cringing from the sunlight): It's too bright! (Ty looks out the window, shocked) It was just a little party. It'll all be cleaned by the time they get home.
Ty: I think you better see this.
Lo: See what? (Ty turns on the television)
TV newscaster: Last night, a luxury hotel was turned upside down, as what has been described as an end of the school year party gone awry.
Lo: Oh no. Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, NO! (Lo's cell phone rings and she answers)
  • Lo (as the penthouse phone rings and she pulls it away): Please don't answer it!
Ty: You'll have to face him sometime! (Presses a button)
Mr. Ridgemount (angrily on the phone): WHAT IS GOING ON AT MY HOTEL?!!
Lo (sheepishly): Nothing, Daddy. I just had a few friends over, no biggie.
Mr. Ridgemount: Well, the news report said over a hundred teenagers were running wild and disturbing the guests.
Lo: No! Daddy, you know how the camera adds ten pounds? Well, it also adds ten teens for every one that was actually there.
Mr. Ridgemount (angrily, while seeing his hotel on the news): IS THAT MY POOL?!
Lo (to herself): Is that my Jeep?!
Mr. Ridgemount (angrily): That is IT! WHEN I GET HOME, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A SERIOUS TALK AND YOU CAN KISS YOUR SUMMER VACATION GOOD- (phone explodes)
Ty (whistling): I think your party days are over!
Lo: Please Rosie, will you help me clean up the condo? By the time they get home, everything will be perfect.
Ty (pointing to the TV): The RCMP was here?
Lo: They were? Oooh, he's cute! (Ty turns off the TV) Hey, I was watching that!
Ty: Who's going to clean the rest of the hotel? Replace all the pool chairs? Have you seen the hot tub?
Lo: That's what the rest of the staff is for, I'm already on it.
    Ty (with a chuckle): Right!
  • Fin: Who are you?
Lo: Your new roommate, Lo! Other room smells like skunk!
Fin (noticing Lo's luggage): That's a lot of stuff! You lugged it all here with you?
Lo: I only had to come from the penthouse!
Fin: Oh, wait. You're the Lo whose huge party we spent all day cleaning up after? We didn't get to surf because of you!
Lo: Well, that's kind of your job, isn't it?
Fin: How long did you say you'd be staying here?
Lo: Not very long! My dad went Outer Limits about my party and is like, trying to teach me a lesson or something. I'm totally cut off! He's actually making me work in the dining room.
    Fin: Wow, he's hardcore!
Lo: I know, right? So it's cool if I crash here?
Fin: Yeah, sure! Knowing you're being tortured for trashing the place kinda makes me feel better about having to clean it. (Emma sees her door and cries)
    Fin: Hey, what's wrong?
Emma: Oh, my room has been declared an environmental hazard.
Fin: Come on, you're officially staying with us.
Emma: Really? (sees Lo in the room) Who are you?
    Lo: It's a long story!
  • Lo: So, Daddy's not mad at me anymore, is he?
Mrs. Ridgemount: I wouldn't say that...
George: Completely postal doesn't even begin to describe his state.
    Lo: What do you know?
George: Enough to stay out of the paper.
  • George (to Lo, in the Pirate Ship restaurant): Aren't you supposed to be taking my order?
Lo: Aren't you supposed to be taller?
Mr. Ridgemount: Your brother's right, why aren't you working?
Lo: Oh it's okay, I've learned my lesson about respecting money and stuff and I'm ready to come back up to the penthouse.
Mr. Ridgemount: You're not going anywhere young lady, not until you show me you've got a solid work ethic! I've got a conference call, I want you to report to work this morning.
Lo (to herself): Okay okay okay okay, right after breakfast.
  • Kelly (to Emma, asking about Lo): Have you seen Princess anywhere?
Lo (moaning as she comes into the restaurant): I don't feel so good! (Lo coughs)
Kelly: Eww, what's wrong with you?
Lo: It's either the chicken pox or the measles or something worse and way more contagious.
Kelly: Are you nuts?! You'll infect the customers! Out, out!
The Cockatoo: *Rawk*, I know how to get out of work, fake the chicken pox, *rawk*!
Kelly (angrily): Why that little weasel!
The Cockatoo: *Rawk*, Kelly wears too much makeup! (Kelly grabs his neck) *Raawk*!
  • Fin (while the girls examine a hotel guest's closet): Guess what movie the Kahuna is screening?! Break Point!
Lo: You asked him to show it?
Fin: More like bribed, I promised I'd clean his bus.
Lo: Wow, you're kind of obsessed with Reef stealing lines.
Emma: What do you care what he does?
Fin: It's for the good of womankind.
Lo (teasingly): Whatever, you totally looove him, you want to marry him and have, like, a hundred of his surfer baaabies!
Fin: What, are you serious? No! He is such a tool, he's like the whole tool shed!
  • Emma (in the Pirate Ship): Wow! So we learned cutlery placement for nothing!
Lo: Emma, we have to fix this, it's my ticket out!
Emma: Yeah, but how? (the scene then cuts to the girls in Lo's Jeep)
Emma: Lo, are you sure you know how to drive?
Lo: Duh, I got my learner's permit two weeks ago!
Lo (After stopping a former guest on a bridge going out of town): Mr. Stevens, don't go!
Emma: You have to give our hotel another chance!
  • Lo (to Reef, after he asks her what to do about Bummer): I don't know... (walks over to Reef and starts flirting with him to demonstrate) but your hair is lookin' so good today, handsome!
    Broseph: She's good.
Reef: I think I have a mission for you.
  • Reef: (To himself in the mirror, while dressing up like a girl) Who's a sexy betty? Oh yeah, I'm a sexy betty! (to Lo, after she comes in and sees him) Uh, it's not what it looks like.
Lo: You're dressing like a girl to beat Fin in the Battle of the Betties!
Reef: Okay, it's exactly what it looks like.
Lo: You need to definitely work on your look, even a blind judge wouldn't think those were real. (shows Reef's uneven chest)
Reef: Whatever, I'm just as hot a girl as I am a guy, see? (a ball pops out from Reef's top)
Lo: Oh sweetie, no beauty and no brains! Come on, time for a man makeover.
  • Fin (to Lo, in a guest room they are cleaning): Your turn for tub duty, Lo.
Lo (to herself in self-motivation): Okay, think of the bikini, think of the bikini.
Fin: Sorry, not following you on the bikini-tub connection.
Lo (holding up her left leg): See this cute anklet? Bought it with my maid money. Two more shifts and I'll have enough cash for this really cute bikini in the gift shop! It's all about motivation.
Fin: Well, what are you waiting for, girl? Scrub your way to that bikini!
Lo: Eww, who showered here?! (holds up a brush with hair on it) Sasquatch? (looks disgusted) Oh, I miss being rich. (Lo's phone rings and she answers it) Hi, Daddy!
Mr. Ridgemount (over the phone): Lauren, my office, now!
Lo: Great! That was his "I mean business" voice. (while scrubbing the tub) Can this day get possibility worse? (holds up the brush again, now with a huge clump of hair)
Fin: I'll take that as a big hairy yes. (Lo vomits off-camera as the scene cuts to a wide shot of the hotel)
  • Lo (arriving in her father's office): Hi, Daddy! How about that um...weather?
Mr. Ridgemount: Save it Lauren, no time for chit-chat! I'm really ticked off! Ticked off at myself that is, for how I've treated you!
    Lo (looking confused): Okay?
Mr. Ridegmount: You see, yesterday I had an eye opening experience. (shows him eating steak at the Pirate Ship restaurant) I was eating my mid-morning steak, when suddenly and without warning, the steak struck back! I saw my life flash before my eyes... (sees scenes of his past, from babyhood to the present) and other than owning my own chain of hotels, being a millionaire many times over and enjoying the finest things life has to offer, I realized I need to be kinder to my loved ones.
