Plot Overview
Convinced that the 'beached whale' found in South Carolina is the same creature that they independently witnessed, both Dee and Rich both head to the coast to try and get a look at it. Both are detained from the area due to warnings of contamination and are questioned by Dr. Cirko and his team when they try and slip past the cordon. To discourage Dee, Dr. Cirko has her grant revoked and discourages her colleagues from helping her. They both meet together and buy a boat to investigate the area. Dee and her daughter find hagfish that have feasted from the carcass and take it back for samples.
Miles raises the creature, now named Nimrod, at his home. He discovers that the creature prefers to be fed live fish and uses a form of electrocution to stun or kill them before eating. He keeps Nimrod in a playhouse out back, but it gets out during a party his sister is holding.
As Dr. Cirko begins examining the recovered carcass, they try and breach its skin with a high energy laser. They succeed, but it causes one of his team, Dr. Singh, to become wounded and contaminated with the creature's blood. He later heals fully from his wounds at an unnatural speed.
Notes
- While under the healing effects of the creature's blood, Dr. Singh goes into a state described as hibernation with very low heart rate.
- While fishing for sharks, a very large version of the creature eats both the shark and swallows the fishing boat whole.
