Episode 6 is the sixth episode of the first season of Surface, and the sixth episode overall.

Dr. Cirko makes a breakthrough leading to tragic results while an accident with Nim forces Miles to run away from home.

Plot Overview

Dr. Cirko, while observing a sea orchid's (a transparent plant) response to a heat lamp, makes a breakthrough in the origin of the creatures. After seeing his results, Davis Lee says that he needs to get Dr. Cirko in contact with all important government agencies. However, he instead sets him up to be hit by a car leaving him hospitalized and later succumbs to his injuries. Dr. Singh, recognizing that the project is about to be buried, copies all of the relevant data and escapes from the lab with the sea orchid. He is injured in the process of escaping, however.

Dee and Rich, having been called in to identify the injured Dr. Cirko, realize they are in a dangerous position. While trying to decide on a course of action, Dr. Singh crashes near her home and gives her a key to a storage building. Inside, they find all of the data and the sea orchid. When coming home with the new finds, they find Lee and his agents in her home and leave on the run.

Nim causes havoc in his mother's home, including burrowing into the ceiling and the walls, leading her to call animal control. No longer able to keep him at home, Miles runs to a junkyard to meet his friend. His friend is followed by an animal control officer who confronts them. While trying to corner Nim with an electric cattleprod, he gets a lethal shock from Nim and dies. Seeing no other option, Miles runs away from home with Nim.

Notes

• Rich's family is in a financial crisis because he has broken the conditions of his bail and no longer has his job.
• Dee, recognizing the danger she is in, leaves her son with his father.
• Rich is still having his hallucinations while seeing pools of water.

• The creature's DNA appears to be made up of a triple bond of Adenine, Glycine, Kerotine in a repeating pattern.
• Somehow the first chromosome, 15th sector, 29th quadrant and a revelation related to the sea orchid led Dr. Cirko to conclude he knew the origin of the species.

• Dr. Cirko makes mention of the proteins Glycine and Kerotine in the DNA of the creature. As DNA is made up of Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, and Guanine this is either an error or is a statement of some kind of artificial or unique feature of its DNA.
