Plot Overview

Miles is sentenced in juvenile court to seven months of community service, a sentence so light only because his father called in several favors. Performing road cleanup, his sister and her friends make fun of him. But out of a sense of guilt and after overhearing plans to enroll him in a youth camp for troubled kids, Savannah confesses that she knew about his pet for a long time and that she's never seen Miles as interested in anything before. Connecting with this, his father pulls a few strings and has his community service transferred to the local aquarium. While taking a tour behind the scenes, he sees that they have several infertile eggs from the creatures.

Dee and Rich craft a handmade pressurized submersible from parts around the Boneyard. After an initial test they find a leak exists which Rich believes he's fixed. With as short a timetable as they have to rendezvous with the creatures, they don't have time to retest before setting out to sea.

Arriving at the dive location, with Jackson remaining on his boat to operate the winch, they proceed down to 1700 feet before worried about leaking has Jackson calling for a stop. Imploring them to return to the surface for a quick repair, they instead jointly decide to continue the dive as they can hear the creatures approaching. Resuming their dive they encounter a very large vent at 4000 feet similar to the kind Dee first encountered the creatures at. They see a pod of a dozen of the creatures approaching, apparently in the process of mating. However, after a piercing shriek, the cable tethering them to Jackson's boat is severed and they begin a rapid descent to the ocean floor. Perched precariously, they watch as the 2 ton cable heads down the vent and pulls them down into the glowing vent.

Notes

  • Davis Lee has a wife or girlfriend who is deaf.
  • The bathysphere, christened Lil' Heat, is equipped with an inflatable raft for emergency ascent and several 'bang-sticks', which are defensive weapons that fire customized .44 caliber bullets at point blank range underwater.
  • Dee has apparently modified her camera so that it will be resistant to the electronic pulses of the creatures.
  • As they approach the dive location, they can see an electrical storm being generated by the creatures.
  • Dee notes that the creatures they observe range from 100 to 175 feet.
  • At a depth of 4000 ft, they find the temperature unexpectedly high.
