Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales was a cartoon series airing Saturday mornings on CBS. It had educational elements in response to a 1961 speech by FCC chairman Newton R. Minnow that television had become "a vast wasteland."
Tennessee was a penguin who, with his walrus pal Chumley, lived in the Megapolis Zoo. Tennessee persistently tried to prove that he could do anything man could, and each time finding himself over his head in trouble, much to the chagrin of Stanley Livingstone, the zookeeper. As a result, Tennessee and Chumley would visit Phineas J. Whoopee, who would answer by demonstration using his three dimensional blackboard. With this, Mr. Whoopee could show how Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, how Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, how suits of armor were used, how the human eye functions, and much more. Armed with this information, Tennessee would set sights on his goal, only to bite off more than he can chew and finding himself in more trouble with Stanley. Yet Tennessee will always trumpet his catch phrase, "Tennessee Tuxedo will not fail!"
The show's animation was affected in Mexico at Gamma Studios, under directorship of Peter Piech and through production auspices of Leonardo-TTV. In the first season, episodes from King Leonardo and His Short Subjects would be screened. Later in the run, The Go-Go-Gophers (first seen on Underdog in 1964) would be screened and then two new elements--Klondike Kat (a feline mountie) and The World Of Commander McBragg (a Munchausen-esque braggart)--were added. General Mills was the show's sponsor.
Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales moved to ABC in 1966, and then in 1967 the show became The Beagles and Tennessee Tuxedo airing at 4 PM Sunday afternoons. (The Beagles was a CBS cartoon show from 1966.)
