Basic Information
Character History
Forced into a life he didn't want due to a bad car accident and subsequent 6 year coma, Johnny Smith is a reluctant psychic who wanted only to marry his high school sweetheart, Sarah, and spend his life teaching high school science. His years in a coma, helped to trigger his psychic abilities, that have alluded to have been latent, and forced him to deal with a world in which his mother is dead, his high school sweetheart is raising Johnny's son with her new husband and live in a world where he is constantly viewed with suspicion, fanaticism or distrust.
Rather than a normal idea of a psychic, Johnny's second sight is triggered only through touching objects and people. Johnny doesn't control his visions and they are often mysteries that he, with the help of his friends, have to solve.
His visions commonly come in two basic types; the observer, who sees events in the past, present or future in a realistic or dreamlike manner told in a ultra-fast, normal speed or super slow fashion; the participant, where Johnny sees himself in the role of the victim, witness, passerby, or perpetrator in the past, present or future during which time, most often, runs at the normal speed.
Throughout the four seasons of the show, Johnny as a character has evolved immensely.
Season one focused mostly on Johnny's attempts to come to terms with his abilities.
Season two introduced Johnny's nemesis and forced Johnny into trying to change a future apocalypse (a topic touched on in season one, but it's in season two where the show begins to look at how Johnny can affect the future in drastic ways).
Season three focused on Johnny's fanatical nature and allowed him to play the role of father to his son.
Season four was a shift away from the constant visions of a coming apocalypse, and focused on Johnny using his powers to help people and for him to get over his emotional coma-issues.
