Plot Overview
Pete befriends a young boy who's traveled from West Virginia to find his father, who left seeking work and promising to send for the boy once he was settled, but the father hasn't written in four years. Searching for the man, Pete discovers that he's held several jobs since arriving in California, and one job he held may have gotten him in serious danger--he worked as a collector for a vicious loan shark, and now the money lender doesn't feel he can trust him anymore.
