Season Four of The Office premiered on September 27, 2007. Due to the 2007 WGA strike, only nineteen of the thirty episodes ordered for this season were completed.
WGA Strike
This season was hit particularly hard by the 2007 WGA strike due to the number of cast members or producers who are also writers. As a result, the season came to a halt as of the 12th episode on November 29 until the strike ended. At the time that the strike went into effect, there was only one script available for production.
However, the greater bind came in the fact that the writer/cast members were refusing to cross picket lines to work as actors. B.J. Novak, Mindy Kaling and Paul Lieberstein all expected to return to work with the threat of a lawsuit hanging overhead if they didn't honor their contracts. Meanwhile, stars like Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson were also refusing to cross picket lines despite not being writers. Series showrunner Greg Daniels, with the solidarity of the cast behind him, managed to have production shut down before the 13th episode was completed.
Once the strike ended, it was announced that the show would produce a handful more episodes for the season.
