The SimpsonsSeason Eight

Hurricane Neddy is the eighth episode of the eighth season of The Simpsons, and the one hundred sixth-first episode overall.

The episode follows Ned Flanders, a devout Christian and neighbor of the Simpsons, after a massive hurricane strikes Springfield, whereby the Flanders' home is the only one that sustains severe damage. In the aftermath, Ned's Christian faith and his relationships with the people of Springfield – particularly Homer – are tested and it leads to him going into a rage, calling out everyone for actual or perceived flaws, and an eventual nervous breakdown and committal in an asylum. A therapist who helped Ned in his childhood might have the answer to Ned's personality quirks.

Allusions and References

  • 1992 Los Angeles Riots: The pre-hurricane looting at the Kwik-E-Mart, and later looting of the Leftorium are akin to the riots in the wake of a controversial acquittal of four white police officers in the beating of Black motorist Rodney King.
  • The Critic: Jay Sherman, from the early 1990s animated comedy about a movie critic who writes for a New York newspaper, is a patient at Calmwood. Jay constantly mutters, "It stinks," his catchphrase.
  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Several scenes are mimicked from the 1975 movie starring Jack Nicholson, about an malingering prison escapee becoming a patient at a mental institution.
