Allusions and References

  • A Charlie Brown Christmas: The residents at Springfield Retirement Castle dance just like the kids do in the seminal 1965 animated TV special.
  • Christmas movies:
    • It's a Wonderful Life: Several parallels between the 1946 movie and this episode include Homer snapping at Lisa for playing the piano (just as George did to one of his children), everyone rallying around to support the Simpsons (just like it was for George), and Marge declaring "It's a miracle!" (a la Mary to George when they realize they have friends who are willing to help them).
    • Miracle on 34th Street: The 1947 Christmas movie's title gives a punny inspiration to the title.
  • Jeopardy!: Marge makes a not-too-successful (to say the least) appearance on the TV game show. Alex Trebek (in a guest role) plays up some of the criticisms publications (such as USA Today writer Jefferson Graham) have levied against him, including thoroughly enforcing game rules (a la the perception by some less-sophisticated viewers that contestants ending with a negative score had to actually pay back the amount to the show, as a penalty).
  • Tickle Me Elmo: The hottest toy for Christmas 1996 inspires Krusty to market a Tickle Me Krusty doll ... WHOO-HAA-HAA!!!!
