Allusions and References
- Before They Were Stars: "Before They Were Famous" is an obvious parody of the 1990s occasional specials and eventual (short-lived) ABC series, hosted by Scott Baio and spotlighting prominent stars and other famous people before their first big break or (as the name implies) before they became famous.
- Oscar Mayer: One of clips in "... Famous" was of Rainer Wolfcastle in his childhood singing a parody of the famous jingle to its line of bologna and other luncheon meats; his is for bratwurst ("from his native Austria"), and after the first half ("F-R-I-T-C"), the second half of the verse is a seeming random order of letters ("H-N-A-C-K-E-N-P-F-P-F-F-E-R-H-A-U-S-P-T-A ...").
- Mary Poppins: The signature song from the 1964 Disney film ("Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious") and much of its plot (a young woman is hired as a nanny for the children of a dysfunctional family, in the absence of the mother, who suffers from anxiety attacks due to stress in dealing with her rambunctious children) form the backbone of this episode's plot.
- "Reservoir Cats" short:
- Reservoir Dogs: The Itchy & Scratchy short's title and the short itself is a parody of the 1992 mobster movie written and directed by by Quentin Tarantino; specifically spoofed is a scene where Mr. Blonde cuts off the ear of a police officer; Scratchy does the same to Itchy, with the camera angles and setting nearly a frame-for-frame re-creation. The 1973 song "Stuck In the Middle With You" by Stealers Wheel is used in the segment.
- Pulp Fiction: Itchy and Scratchy dance in a manner similar to the 1994 crime drama film, where Vincent Vega (John Travolta) takes his boss’ wife (Uma Thurman) out to dinner and the two impulsively enter a dance contest.
- The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson:
- "Krusty's Komedy Klassics" is a spoof of a mid-1980s TV series compiling classic comedy skits and other features from The Tonight Show. (Krusty realizes he is in very big-time trouble when he belatedly sees the initials to the white supremacist organization the Klu Klux Klan and nervously says, "KKK? That's not good ... ." He avoids food being thrown at him until he is clonked on the head with a beer bottle.)
- Mad About You: The skit, "Mad About Shoe" is based on the NBC sitcom. Not only does the skit fall flat, but the audience is still apparently angry at Krusty over the opening segment. (Carson frequently would lampoon popular – and sometimes, not so popular – TV shows of the day.) Once again, Krusty is hit with bottles and other heavier objects, knocking him unconscious.
- NYPD Blue: Before Krusty is KO'ed for the second time in a matter of minutes, he tries to explain that the originally intended skit was "NYPD Shoe," a spoof of the ABC police drama.
- "Stupid Pet Tricks": Although seen on the competing Late Night With David Letterman, Krusty once again tries to save his faster-than-the-rats-can-escape-the-sinking-ship of an episode with a pet trick involving a chihuahua and a small ball. Once again, Krusty gets the worst end of things. (Animal segments, including some doing silly pet tricks for the amusement of the audience (although such shorts were not specifically named) were sometimes included in "Carson's Comedy Classics" episodes.)
