The TV IV:Proposals/TV Ratings

From The TV IV
Jump to: navigation, search

I think it would be a good idea to list (not sure if this is the right name) TV Ratings for each TV-Show. What I mean by TV Ratings are things like TV-G and TV-PG and so on. I think this would be a good idea because it would help people figure out the shows they like based on the rating.TV ratings could also be used as a reference. What do you think?--Sportman 12:29, 23 December 2006 (EST)

TV Ratings you know the things that pops up in the corner before every show. I don't know if "TV Ratings" is the right word but it sounds right. TV Rating are the same thing as Movie Ratings just different. Many of you should and probably do know this. I am just explaining further since the last time I posted something here people said they didn't understand what I was trying to say so I decided to explain more.--Sportman 14:53, 23 December 2006 (EST)

Maybe you should chill out when nobody responds. It's a holiday weekend, few people are going to be paying close attention to the wiki. Considering that TV ratings are a fairly new thing that varies between episodes and channels, I don't think it would be feasible to include a definite rating for each episode. I don't really see it as a necessary or useful function. --IndieRockLance 15:25, 23 December 2006 (EST)

I am sorry, I was only thinking of myself and I should just chill out. But to,answer your comment, I thought there was a group that oversees TV Ratings. Similar to the MPAA which oversees Movie Ratings.--Sportman 16:07, 23 December 2006 (EST)

Again, I am deeply sorry but I just wanted to say I found the group that oversees TV Ratings. The group is known as the TV Parental Guidelines System but something to remember though is that they only oversee American television. You can also see this for more information as well:TV Ratings.--Sportman 16:34, 23 December 2006 (EST)

I'm well aware of the television ratings system, but it's still not pertinent information because a single rating doesn't apply to every episode of a show. Because the TV Parental Guidelines ratings system is a self-imposed measure, it is up to each individual network to rate episodes of programs as their standards and practices departments see fit. It would probably be a good thing to have an article about the television ratings systems, but trying to figure out the rating for each episode of a series wouldn't be prudent, especially if it were incorporated into the episode's template because it wouldn't apply for anything broadcast before 1997. --IndieRockLance 17:55, 23 December 2006 (EST)
We have an article at ratings. —Naddy

I didn't mean necessarily for each episode, I mean for each show. I know it varies by episode though so finding an exact TV rating would probably be hard. But, you could see which TV rating appears the most and go from there. But, (as you said) there wasn't any Rating System before 1997. Although you could just list the show as unrated or take a vote by having a forum (in wiki-format) for each show. You could also have a TV-IV rating system for all shows or just shows that aired before 1997. I am just throwing out ideas so don't think I think TV-IV would be bad without this. Thank you for responding though and have a Merry Christmas!--Sportman 22:27, 23 December 2006 (EST)

I was just thinking that, even though a show may have aired before 1997 don't networks that still show those shows give them ratings? For example, Full House was on before 1997 and it still (today) is rated.--Sportman 22:34, 23 December 2006 (EST)

So far the only implied proposal that makes any sense to me is documenting the rating for the original broadcast of each episode. For non-US shows, the respective local rating (e.g., Canada's 14+, Australia's M, etc.) would be used. Determining this retroactively is probably very difficult. While I'm not opposed to adding this information, I'd prefer if the effort was rather spent on all the other things we already aim to include but fail to fill out in practice, starting with correct and complete cast listings. —Naddy 10:50, 24 December 2006 (EST)
Agreed that this is a worthwhile idea but I'm not sure it's worth it as is to dedicate a concentrated effort to add ratings for shows when there is more relevant information to add to existing episodes. When we finally get variable templates up and running, it would definitely qualify for inclusion as one of the variables. --Wizardryo\talk 04:57, 25 December 2006 (EST)
