The Wild Thornberrys is an animated fantasy that aired on Nickelodeon.
The Thornberrys are a family whose patron, Nigel Thornberry, is a nature documentary filmmaker. His wife is Marianne and his two daughters are Debbie and Eliza, and they have a pet monkey, Darwin, in tow. The main star of the show is Eliza, whose chance encounter with an African shaman (whom while he was a porcupine Eliza rescues) gives her the ability to communicate through regular dialogue with animals. It is through this talent that Eliza (presumably named after Eliza Doolittle) has an inkling of animal behavior and life traits. The rest of the family (apart from Darwin) does not know of Eliza's talent or else she loses it. (Debbie discovers it late in the run).
Also along is Donnie, a four-year-old boy raised in the wild by orangutans after poachers killed his parents. The Thornberrys would eventually adopt Donnie.
The series spawned two theatrical movies, the second of which was a crossover with Rugrats.
