Basic Information
Gunneson was the first mate of the naval vessel which encountered the alien probe Threshold is investigating. Immediately prior to the encounter Gunneson received a 'Dear John' letter from his girlfriend.
Unlike the rest of the ship's crew, who either died or were relatively quickly subsumed by the effects of the alien signal, Gunneson seems partially resistent. He initially hid and waited for help, rather than fleeing the ship with the others, and appears to be attempting to re-assert a measure of his humanity by communicating with the Threshold team.
The effects of the alien probe signal's re-conditioning have left Gunneson much more resilient than a normal human.
