Season Two of Transformers premiered on September 23, 1985.
In July of 1986, Transformers: The Movie hit the big screens. It was between seasons two and three. Set in the year 2005, It marked a turning point in the Transformers universe, as many of the original characters met their maker. Longtime favorites such as Prowl, Ironhide, Ratchet, Brawn, Wheeljack, and Windcharger all met their end in the movie. But it was undoubtedly the death of Optimus Prime that horrified every Transformer fan across the globe.
These deaths were deemed necessary so that new characters could be introduced and woven into the storyline. Characters like Springer, Blurr, Ultra Magnus, and Kup were soon accepted by TransFans. But it was to be the character of a previously anonymous Autobot named Hot Rod that really captivated us. By the end of the movie, he was to be the Universe's last hope against the impending doom of the planet-devouring Unicron.
Autobots weren't the only ones to go through growing pains in the movie. Starscream, Skywarp, and Thundercracker were all killed off. As if to be the antithesis of Prime's death, the mighty Megatron was mortally wounded in the same fight that killed Optimus. Along with Insecticon clones ,and the aforementioned tandem of Skywarp and Thundercracker, Megatron was rescued by Unicron and given a new body on the condition that he and his new soldiers would hunt down and kill the new leader of the Autobots, Ultra Magnus, and the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. This Matrix was apparently the only power in the universe that could stop Unicron.
Many other pivotal characters were introduced in the film, such as the Junkions, Sharkticons, and of course, the Quintessons. In the end, though, it all came down to a duel between Megatron, now calling himself Galvarton, and Hot Rod in the recesses of Unicron, while a tremendous battle was waged outside above Cybertron. Hot Rod gets control of the matrix and is transformed into Rodimus Prime, an older, bigger, stronger, and more mature version of himself. Rodimus defeats Galvatron and unleashes the power of the matrix, destroying Unicron.
Transformers: The Movie set the stage for the cartoon series that followed. Fans that were used to the old fraternity of Autobots, and Decepticons came to like the new characters for the most part. Eventually, even Optimus Prime made a comeback through the miracle of animation. And although the movie still meets with mixed reviews, no one can deny it's impact on the Transformers universe.
