WIAT is the call sign for the CBS affiliate in Birmingham, Alabama. It broadcasts on digital channel 30, mapped on tuners as 42.
WIAT signed on in 1965 mainly as CBS affiliate WBMG, although its pickings of shows were those of lower rated fare as the higher rated shows landed under secondary affiliation with NBC station WAPI/channel 13 (today WVTM). Up to this point, WAPI had been a CBS affiliate. WBMG would alternately pick up NBC shows passed up by WAPI until 1970 when WAPI aired NBC shows exclusively with WBMG taking CBS solely. Because the station's signal did not penetrate out of Birmingham proper, CBS would be seen in western Alabama on WCFT/channel 33 and in Eastern Alabama on WHMA/channel 40 (both up until October 2014 were ABC satellites for WBMA-LD in Birmingham, under the call ABC33/40).
In 1998, WBMG changed its call to WIAT. Its transmitter power had been increased over the past ten years, and today WIAT is one of CBS's strongest affiliates.
