Plot Overview

The Arkansas state government is investigating rumors of illegal ultimate fighting at Copperhead State Prison, where the top administration is selling videos of these cage fights on the underground market. When an undercover officer, who has found incriminating evidence and is preparing to deliver them to the state, he is found out and brutally killed by the prison's top fighter, an inmate called "The Hammer."

The governor turns to the Texas Rangers for help, and Walker, Trivette and Gage agree to help re-establish the investigation. Walker and Gage go in as inmates while Trivette takes a job as a guard. They do an effective job establishing themselves as they begin gathering evidence of the illegal fighting.

They learn that the warden and guards force inmates to fight while the events are videotaped, and of their work with a corrupt promoter to sell the videos online. The winners are rewarded with gifts and other pleasures (which Walker and Gage turn down). Walker eventually learns about "The Hammer," the top fighter who has not only never lost a fight (nor come close) but has killed several inmates in the most brutal manner. Meantime, Trivette secretly keeps in contact with Alex and Sydney providing coded information into the investigation, learning that the warden had been in deep personal debt but now is extremely wealthy and that it is likely from sales of the videos.

After Walker wins a match with the feared Whitelaw Lundgren, the two gain respect for each other and Lundgren is able to provide some key information about the operation. A plan is hatched to send in law officers to raid the operation.

Eventually, the prison administration catch on that their new inmates and the new guard are not who they seem to be and order main-event match with "The Hammer." As Trivette is found out (as he calls for law enforcement to begin their sweep of the prison), Gage is the first opponent and is beaten down, before Walker steps in and is more than able to keep pace with an unbeatable foe. When the warden sees that someone capable of defeating "The Hammer" is getting the best of him, the main guard orders Walker shot, but Lundgren tackles the guard just as he's firing, causing his aim to be off, fatally wounding "The Hammer." Just then, a huge riot breaks out and Walker, a recovered Gage and Trivette manage -- with the help of the inmates -- beat up all the guards and bust the entire operation.
