Whose Line Is It Anyway? is a game show hosted by Clive Anderson. Four contestants, usually professional comedians, play through various games which require improvisation. For example, "Party Quirks" required one of the contestants to welcome guests (the other three contestants) to their party and guess what the guest is supposed to be (e.g., a depressed clown). Another popular round, "Hoedown", required all contestants to make up a Western-style song on the spot. Points were awarded seemingly randomly by Anderson. The winner(s) of the show got to read out the closing credits in the style of Clive's choosing.
The show originally started on BBC Radio 4, but was transferred to television and broadcast by Channel 4. The show eventually made its way to the US as well, initially hosted by Clive in a series of specials by Channel 4, before finding a permanent place on the ABC network in a new version hosted by Drew Carey. See Whose Line Is It Anyway? (USA) for more information.
