Wordplay
Wordplay was a game show airing daytime on NBC.
Two contestants scored money by selecting odd words from a board of nine words, and guessed which of a panel of three celebrities was giving the correct definition. Cash prizes were determined by how three words were connected with each other. A bonus word won a contestant a trip, theirs to keep regardless of the game's outcome.
The winner played a bonus game and had 45 seconds to identify words from two definitions for each word, making a left-to-right connection. Each word is worth $100; a block goes up for an incorrect guess. Making a connection successfully wins the jackpot starting at $5000 and progressing $2500 each time it is not won.
The basic idea of defining words goes back to the 1965 game show Call My Bluff.
