Season Five of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters premiered on December 24, 2003. The American version of this season was dividing into two subtitles: Yu-Gi-Oh! Grand Championship and Yu-Gi-Oh! Dawn of the Duel.
The Grand Championship arc (episodes 185-198) is exclusive to the anime and was not in the manga. After the defeat of Dartz, Yugi and friends have no way to get home (Pegasus had paid for their flight back in Season Four). Kaiba offers them a flight home if Yugi, Joey, and Rebecca compete in his tournament, the KC Grand Championship, where the best duelists from all over the world duel for a chance to face Yugi. But things aren't what they seem as there is more to two of the entrants than meets the eye.
The Dawn of the Duel arc corresponds to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Millenium World manga. Some fans consider this two seperate arcs, the Pharaoh's Memories (episodes 199-219) and the Ceremonial Battle (episodes 220-224), referred to as "End Game" by Kids' WB!'s promotions.
In the Pharoah's Memories arc, as the name suggests, Yami Yugi learns of his forgotten 5,000-year-old past. However, Yami Bakura finds his way in (he had previously infused himself in a piece of Yugi's puzzle back in the Season Two episode "The Mystery Duelist (2)") and tries to awaken the evil Zorc Necrophades. It's up to Yugi and his friends to help the pharoah stop this evil and to find his lost name... Atem.
In the Ceremonial Battle arc, the conclusion to Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, it is time to send Atem back to his home world. But in order to open the door to his world, he must lose a duel. Yugi challenges him to a duel to prove himself worthy and see if he is ready to part ways with Atem. If Yugi loses, Atem will be stuck on Earth for another 5,000 years. If Atem loses, he will be sent back to his home world.
