Plot Overview

Vincent Marion offers to hire Stu again, to find Eva Stehlik's killer, but the detective refuses the offer, insisting that he's now in business for himself. He encounters one of the thugs who attacked him for the camera and takes him to Lt. Butter, but the cop naturally dismisses the whole thing as petty theft and once again orders Bailey to go home...or else. Carla's kooky neighbor Lundstrom tells Stu about the 'Harlequin Ball', the costume event he held where Andy Marion dressed as the devil, Carla as an angel, and Eva was in attendance as well, as well as Vincent Marion and another man dressed as a court jester, though Lundstrom insists he was the only person there dressed as a court jester. The ubiquitous Butter takes Bailey to meet an Army Colonel who knows the meaning of the pictures in Carla's camera--all the objects were stolen from museums by the Nazis--and Butter and the Colonel pressure Bailey into telling what he knows, which isn't much. Stu goes to visit Vincent Marion again with his suspicions that Andy was dealing in stolen art objects, and Vincent tells him that he knew about his brother. The art dealer agrees to fund the detective's trip to Italy to search for a missing tapestry. After he leaves, Marion pulls a curtain to reveal Oskar Pauker, who tells him that Bailey will be killed the minute he steps off the plane in Italy.
