Plot Overview

Bailey flies to Rome after discovering that one of the stolen treasures, a Sistine tapestry, was mailed to a young Italian man in suburban New York by his uncle. From there, he's led to a Dutch monastery and a monk with a shameful secret, and then to a circus in France, where he stumbles upon two more dead bodies, one of which is art dealer Oskar Pauker, of whose murder the Surete suspects him of. He gets a new lead in France and is preparing to go to Israel when he's suddenly set upon by a trio of knife-wielding thugs. All through his trip, he's dogged by determined Colonel Watkins, who's certain the detective knows something and isn't divulging it, but the Colonel gives Stu a break and allows him to 'work' for the U.S. government.
