Overview

In a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland, the Dean family move into a new home in 1970. The children, Billy and Patty, both experience discomfort in the house. One day the mother, Patricia, hears a knocking in the hallway and checks to see what it is. When she returns to the room she was in, the bed is messed up. Freaked out, she calls her mother and during the phone call the faucets in the bathroom are inexplicably turned on. Events continue occur, particularly with Billy who hears scratches, foot steps, and sees a blonde woman.

Despite their insistence, the father doesn't believe them. He tells them to ignore the things that they hear and it will go away. Soon this creates strain in the family; the father begins drinking. Years later, Billy believes that entities in the house drove his father to change. One night Patty is touched by something in her bed. At 16 she marries to get out of the house. Not long afterwards the father leaves without telling the family and never returns. Now living alone with her two sons, Patricia begins sleeping in their room at night. One day she has a mild stroke; other incidents follow.

Patricia finally meets a man, Richard Tyson, and the two starts dating. Unlike her former husband, Richard is concerned about the hauntings and wants her to move, but she has nothing but the house and is too proud to accept anything from friends and family. They call a priest who blesses the house. Hours later, they experience a disturbing attack. Objects are thrown around the room; Billy, fed up, grabs the holy water and starts demanding that the spirits leave. That night, the family moves out of the house for good. 10 months later, Patricia Bean passes away; Billy's father shortly afterwards.

Years later, in 2002, after coming public with the incidents of his childhood, Billy is contacted by an author who tells him of similar experiences by people in the area. He says that rifle range of an old militia was on the property of his house. The man with a scar on his face that attacked Patricia might be a man who was injured at the firing range. Although still disturbed by the events of his childhood, Billy accepts this news and finds it comforting.
