Show Breakdown
Opening
Several actors, directors and film crew members who were nominated for awards in the awards show talk about how many awards they were nominated for and how many times they've lost in the past, including Peter O'Toole. The gist of the film presentation is that everyone is excited about being nominated and none of them expect to win. The segment ends with shots of everyone who was filmed for the opening, played over Guillermo del Toro whistling the tune from Pan's Labyrinth.
Segments
- DeGeneres talks about her dream of hosting the Academy Awards, how there are a record amount of Mexican filmmakers and actors nominated, and that there are far too many British nominees in the crowd. She then goes on to antagonize the nominees and put them more and more on edge about how many people are watching and how this is a "make or break" moment in their careers. She also suggests that winners keep their speeches short, or at least make stuff up to get extra time. At the end of her opening bit, DeGeneres pulls out a tambourine and a gospel choir dressed in white files out of the back and travels up the aisles singing a song of celebration while she
- Will Ferrell sings about how sad it is to be a comedian at the Oscars because no matter how much money a movie makes, the comedian will never win an award. Jack Black leaps out from backstage and declares that even though they won't win, they're going to fight all of the nominees and win. After threatening everyone in the audience, John C. Reilly stands up and tells them that they don't need to beat up the nominees (except for Helen Mirren and Mark Wahlberg), they can take on serious roles too and get awards with scripts like one about a man with no arms or legs who teaches gangbangers Hamlet.
- The Hollywood Film Coral performs a salute to sound design in film, which is them performing all of the sound effects of what is playing on screen behind them.
- After the Best Supporting Actor award was presented, Ellen wanders through the crowd, talks to Mark Wahlberg and attempts to pass on a script she wrote which combines Big Momma's House with Goodfellas. He promises to read it during the show.
- Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Gore gave a short presentation on the Oscars going entirely "green" in the name of being friendly towards the environment. They recommend that viewers go to the Oscars website for tips on how to do the same with their homes and DiCaprio spends much of his time with Gore needling him into making a "big announcement" on stage. Gore was rumored to be announcing his intentions to run for president on the show, but as he started to make an announcement to the effect of that he's played off stage.
- In another attempt to get with a famous director, DeGeneres talks with Clint Eastwood and gets a picture with him (taken by Stephen Spielberg) for her MySpace profile.
- Throughout the night, the Pilobolus Dance Theatre interpretive dance troupe rolled out behind a lit white curtain and contorted in such a way that they resembled icons from films that were nominated, like a van from Little Miss Sunshine. At one point, Degeneres walked behind the screen and was absorbed into the mass of the troupe, who proceeded to form into the logo for Snakes on a Plane. The other films shown include Happy Feet (penguins), The Devil Wears Prada (a shoe) and The Departed (a gun).

Trivia
- Pre-Show: The beginning of the Road to the Oscars special which preceded the actual awards show was was specially made involving the nominees from the awards show. The penguins from Happy Feet appear and talk about what they'll do if they wind up winning, but eventually they come to the conclusion that if the lead pengiun wins, he'll be better off dancing. He swims to Los Angeles, where he sees several men wearing the bright green Borat thong and the lead car from Cars. Across the street, he watches a pirates, a queen and a soldier pushing the yellow Volkswagen bus from Little Miss Sunshine.
- Scorsese's Win: Martin Scorsese had been nominated for the best director Oscar five times prior to the 79th Academy Awards, none of which that he won. On the last show, host Jon Stewart mused about Three 6 Mafia wining the best original song award, saying "Three 6 Mafia: One Oscar. Martin Scorsese? Zero."
