Trivia

The Show

  • This episode was the intended pilot for what was to have been called Those Were the Days, Norman Lear's second attempt at filming an American adaptation of the British sitcom Till Death Us Do Part. Filmed in 1969, it was the second of three attempted pilots produced by Lear for what would become All in the Family (the first was Justice for All)
  • The series name was also used as the name for its title song, which would also be used when the series eventually became All in the Family
  • This episode was originally produced for ABC, which (like with Justice for All before it) rejected Those Were the Days. Like the first two pilots, it was reworked and a third pilot was shot by Lear with the Gloria character recast and the Richard character replaced by Mike Stivic. The third pilot was instead picked up by CBS and aired as All in the Family's premiere episode, "Meet the Bunkers", on January 12, 1971
  • This episode never aired on television until 1998, when it aired on TV Land as part of an All in the Family marathon. It was subsequently released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment as part of its Norman Lear TV Collection DVD box set in 2009
