Plot Overview

Ernest reminisced to Janet about his time in the orphanage. He has no idea who his parents were, just that he and Alex were left in the waiting room of the clinic when he was 2 and Alex was less than a week old. Alex was very outgoing, and now Ernest blamed himself for having asked him to take Karen out when he was tied up at the hospital. Ernest realized Ken intends to fight him for Janet's affections. Janet assured him it was all over between her and Ken. John's secretary, Peggy Harris, "a good-looking young negro woman of about 25," speculated on her plans when she graduates from law school in 3 years. Ken reminded Janet that he and Laura are separated. Ken was resigned when Janet rebuffed his advances, but got upset when she said she might marry Ernest.
