Plot Overview
As Aang, Katara, and Sokka continue to Omashu they meet a group of musical nomads led a carefree man named Chong. Chong and his group have traveled the world and have stories to tell about everything. One such tale involves a tunnel that runs under the local mountains to the city of Omashu that was constructed by two lovers. According to Chong, they didn’t want anyone to find out about their love, so they built a labyrinth to hide their secret. And only those who trust in love can safely travel the path to the other side. After being discovered by Fire Nation troops, the gang has no other option but to travel through a foreboding tunnel, which legends say, will trap those who try to use it. The Fire Nation troops discover that the group has entered the cave and instead of pursuing, they opt to collapse the entrance and let the cave to its alleged job. Once trapped inside, Sokka notices that the paths they’ve been taking are changing and the group is divided by a rising wall. Aang, Karata and Appa end up together while Sokka get stuck with Chong and his musicians.
With light running out and panic beginning to get in, Aang and Karata stumble onto what they think is the exit but is actually a tomb. It turns out the tale about the lovers was true and the tomb explains everything. Aang and Katara’s final torch runs out and they discover that glowing crystals in the ceiling lead the way out. Meanwhile, Sokka, Chong and his group have a run in with the bagdermoles that live under the mountain. Luckily for them, the badgermoles love music and they’re able to sing their way out to the outside. Aang, Karata and Sokka are reunited as Chong and his nomads continue their journey to where ever the wind takes them. The gang finally reaches Omashu only to discover that it has been taken over by the Fire Nation.
Zuko and Iroh continue their exile from the Fire Nation and attempt to blend in Iroh drink the tea from what he thinks is a rare plant, but it turns out to be poisonous. When they go to a local village for treatment, they met a girl named Song who invites them to dinner with her mother. Song tries to connect to Zuko, thinking he has been a victim of the war like her, but to no avail. As Iroh and Zuko are leaving, Zuko steals their ostrich horse despite the protests of his uncle. They continue their travel on their stolen mount as Song looks on in sadness.
Notes
- We learn that the Tale of the Two Lovers is true and that the man and woman were the first Earthbenders. They learned from the badgermoles that lived under the mountain that separated their two villages and used their abilities to construct the tunnel. After the man was killed in the war between the two villages, the woman unleashed a powerful display of her Earthbending. Instead of destroying everyone, she ended the war and founded a new city. They named it after the woman Oma and her slain lover, Shu; the city of Omashu was founded.

Iroh: You’re looking at the rare white dragon bush. Its leaves make a tea so delicious it’s heartbreaking! That, or it’s the white jade bush, which is poisonous.
Chong: We’re nomads, happy to go wherever the wind takes us!
Aang: You guys are nomads? That’s great! I’m a nomad.
Chong: Hey, me too.
Aang: I know… you just said that.
Katara: Is this real or a legend?
Chong:' Oh, it’s a real legend.
Song: When I was a little girl, the Fire Nation raided our farming village. All the men were taken away. That was the last time I saw my father.
Zuko: I haven’t seen my father in many years.
Song: Oh. Is he fighting in the war?
Zuko: Yeah...
