The Southern Air Temple is the third episode of the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the third episode overall. Aang visits his home, now empty and derelict.

Plot Overview
The trio head for the Southern Air Temple, Aang's former home. Upon their arrival Aang is shocked to discover the village is empty, all the monks having been murdered a hundred years ago. Prince Zuko is forced to dock his ship at the naval base of his rival, Captain Zhao, in order to make repairs.

Happenings
- Aang, Sokka, and Katara visit the Southern Air Temple, one of four Air Nomad temples in the world. The temple is deserted, save the corpses of Fire Nation troops and murdered Air Nomads.
- Aang enters the Avatar State again, but Katara is able to calm him down.
- Prince Zuko and General Iroh stop at a naval base to make repairs. They do their best to conceal the cause of the damage from Captain Zhao, but Zhao finds out from Zuko's men that it was the Avatar.
- Zuko and Zhao fight an Agni Kai, which Zuko wins.
Characters
- Momo: A lemur that has been living by himself at the temple, he becomes Aang's pet (after Sokka tries to eat him first).
- Avatar Roku: The Avatar before Aang, Sokka and Katara are shocked to discover that Aang's previous incarnation was from the Fire Nation.
- Monk Gyatso: Aang discovers the corpse of his old teacher, and the pain drives him into the Avatar State.
- Fire Sages: When Aang enters the Avatar State, Avatar shrines across the world are activated, alerting the keepers of the shrine to his presence. The Fire Sages pass this information on to the Fire Lord.
- Zhao: Captain Zhao is introduced for the first time. He is in charge of the Fire Nation naval base that Zuko's ship docks at, and he thinks Zuko is a joke. After Zuko defeats Zhao in an Agni Kai duel, he attacks Zuko as the prince walks away, but is stopped by Iroh.
