Plot Overview

After being badly wounded by Renji's activated zanpakuto, Ichigo was assumed to be completely immobilized by the attack. Despite Rukia's pleas for him to run away, Ichigo picks his sword back up and evens the battle's score by increasing his spiritual energy to the point that he feels no pain and fights as speeds which rival Renji's. He turns the tides so heavily that he very nearly delivers a killing blow to Renji. However, his zanpakuto is cut down to the hilt by Byakuya. Before he's aware of what happened, Byakuya stabs him twice, at speeds which mystify even Renji, and Ichigo gets accidentally killed.

Rukia tries to help Ichigo, but it's too late. Both of the soul reapers say he's dead and that if she were to go to him, it would do nothing but add more years onto her forthcoming sentence. Renji is dumbfounded by her empathy, but Byakuya tells her that he understands and that he apparently looks like someone she once knew. But Ichigo isn't quite dead yet. He's still trying to antagonize Byakuya, but Rukia stops him from being killed. She acts as if she were offended by Ichigo grabbing her brother and goes back to the soul society with Renji and her brother. Byakuya agrees that there's no reason to inflict a killing blow because he may as well be powerless anyway. Rukia tells him not to move after her, or else she'll never forgive him and they all disappear into the soul society.

After the gates disappear, Urahara comes to they dying Ichigo just before he passes out. He's brought back the shop and told that he needs to relax or else his wounds will open up. Urahara tells him that there's a way into the soul society, but he'll only tell him as long as he trains for 10 days with Urahara and the others. He allowed Ichigo to fight the soul reapers that night to prove to him that he's not at all ready to go into the lion's den. Urahara assures him that they have plenty of time to rescue Rukya before her execution in 30 days.
