Plot Overview
Nearly 6 years prior, Masaki Kurosaki, mother to Ichigo, Yuzu and Karin, was killed mysteriously when she tried to stop Ichigo from getting swept away into a river during a rainstorm. He was preoccupied with the spirit that he thought he was saving and didn't see what killed her, but he always assumed that it was completely his fault. In the present day, he and the other family members take off from school and work to visit her grave. They're joined by Rukia, who refused to give Ichigo the complete day off from stopping hollows should he be needed. She suggests that perhaps Ichigo's mother was killed by a hollow, but he refuses to accept this as an answer.
While the Kurosakis pay their respects to their mother, Rukia is stalked by a member of the Soul Society's stealth force. He confronts her over staying in the human realm for so long and tells her that she must return with a good excuse or else their superiors will take drastic measures against them. Ichigo, after being alerted to the reaper by Kon, shows up at an inopportune moment to admit that he's got Rukia's powers now and is a "substitute soul reaper." Transferring her powers to an unworthy human is a serious crime, one which Saido plans to remedy by killing the "impostor." Ichigo pulls the mod soul out of Kon's mouth to do battle with Saido.
Meanwhile, across the cemetery grounds, a Hollow attacks Yuzu and Karin. Ichigo and Saido put a hold on their fight to try to save them when its existence becomes apparent to them through Rukia's pager.
