Plot Overview
At the cemetery where Ichigo's mother is buried, a hollow has attacked Yuzu and Karin. Ichigo stopped it from eating Yuzu's soul, but when it reveals its entire form to him, he realizes that the girl he saw by the river six years ago was nothing more than bait from the hollow that he's now fighting. Rukia explains that the hollow has been codenamed "Grand Fisher," on the count of his lure that is disguised as a human. He's been active for 50 years and was what actually killed Ichigo's mother. During the battle, Ichigo gets caught by Grand Fisher, forcing Saido to get involved in the battle. He saves Karin but is fatally wounded by the hollow, or at least that's how it appears until they realize he's just sleeping.
Ichigo sends Kon away to keep his sisters safe and goes back into battle with the hollow, a fight which Rukia is convinced he will lose. He's badly wounded by the hollow, which mocks him for being overcome by his emotions and fighting erratically. To make things worse, the hollow disguises its lure as his mother. Rukia has a crisis of conscience when she flashes back to her former captain's speech about the battle for honor and decides that she must stay on the sidelines to allow Ichigo to preserve his honor. The hollow goes in for the final blow, but it's interrupted when the lure transfers Ichigo's mother's recorded thoughts to him. Ichigo finally lands a blow and the hollow runs away.
Saido heads home to the soul society and tells Rukia to remember that the soul society is going to discover what's happened eventually. But, he won't file a report on what happened out of respect for Ichigo's potential. Ichigo comes to terms with his role in his mother's death, but still vows revenge on Grand Fisher.
