Plot Overview

Picking up directly after the end of the previous episode, Ichigo has sent the hollowed soul of Ionue's brother out of reality, but the hollow healed itself and intends to attack Inoue in a fit of jealousy and loneliness. Ichigo races to their rescue, but before he arrives Inoue's soul is ejected from her body and Tatsuki is badly injured in the crossfire.

Although he is beaten badly by the hollow, he does manage to protect her soul from being taken by the hollow and corrupted. Ichigo puts up a stronger fight and manages to sever one of the hollow's hands, but ultimately it becomes Ionue's duty to set her brother's soul free. She stops her brother from harming Ichigo in the street outside her home and explains that she wants to free him of all responsibility over her life.

When he realizes that Ionue continued to pay respect to his memory although she wasn't praying at his shrine, the hollow breaks free of his creator's hold on him. With this new clarity, he decides that he can not live as a monster without fearing the possibility of becoming evil again. He takes Ichigo's sword and impales himself on it, setting his soul free. After healing Inoue and placing her soul back in her body, Rukia modifies Inoue's memories so that she would not remember what transgressed that night; the next day, Ionue attempts to convince her friends that a sumo-wresler with a gun trashed her home.

Now that he has faced his first true challenge as a soul reaper, Ichigo finally accepts Rukia's demand that he fill her place as a reaper while she recovers her powers in the temporary body.
