Who Killed Nick Hazard? is the third episode of the first season of Burke's Law.
At a private eye convention, obnoxious Nick Hazard manages to offend several fellow private eyes before he is shot to death in a room full of gumshoes...and no one sees or hears a thing! Among the suspects: Honey Best, Nick's ex-wife (whom Amos catches in the act of rifling his office); elderly detective Louis Pike, who was offended that Hazard wouldn't lend him money; Joe Tanner, Hazard's ex-partner; Julie, his former assistant; and Ben Hutchins, who works in a P.I. firm with his brother.
Anne Francis guest-starred in two episodes of the original Burke's Law, one of which served as the pilot episode for her series, Honey West. Edd Byrnes also appeared in the original series, in the episode "Who Killed Mr. Colby in Ladies' Lingerie?".
Behind the Scenes
Allusions and References
The basic plotline of the episode is that there's a murder at a private eye convention, which opens the door for quite a few in-jokes about TV detectives from the past.
Anne Francis appears in this episode as 'Honey BEST'--evidently Spelling couldn't get the rights to the character name 'Honey West', hence the name change. Similarly, Tanya Roberts appears as Julie, who previously worked with two other girls in a private eye agency. Again, Spelling lost the rights to all the Charlie's Angels character names when he sold the series to Sony, so Julie's last name is different than her last name in Charlie's Angels.
Jameson Parker appears in this episode as Ben Hutchins of 'the Hutchins and Hutchins detective agency', an obvious spoof of his character on Simon and Simon.
Additionally, Buddy Ebsen appears as Louie Pike, an elderly detective similar to his classic Barnaby Jones character.
Edd Byrnes of 77 Sunset Strip also appears, but in a minor role. Also, the murder victim, Nick Hazard, is a spoof of Humphrey Bogart detective characters--he's played by noted Bogart impersonator Robert Sacchi.
Anne Francis first appeared as Honey West in an episode of the original Burke's Law, "Who Killed the Jackpot?", and Amos first met her in that episode as she was breaking into the dead man's apartment. In this episode, she plays Honey Best, and how does Amos first make contact with her? He catches her rifling through papers after she broke into Hazard's office!
